In anticipation of the tour stop MOTORCITYBLOG checked in with SuicideGirls founder Missy Suicide to talk about the upcoming tour and the SuicideGirls website and community.
MCB: Let's imagine you were not the founder of SuicideGirls for a minute here and the upcoming SuicideGirls Blackheart Burlesque show was coming to your town. After a solo road trip to see the show the night before, you return to your hometown for another round of Blackheart Burlesque. This time, you are trying to gather all your friends to come out and join you. What would you say to your friends to convince them to come?
MISSY: You HAVE to see this show it has the sexy Adventure Time set to the Black Keys. enough said :)
MCB: Which Suicide Girls will be taking part in this current Blackheart Burlesque tour and how much creative input do they have in their individual routines and overall production of it in proportion to the choreographer and yourself?
MISSY: The dancers rotate in and out depending upon their availability, they are all professional dancers and this is a 10 week tour. The girls choreograph their solos for the most part and all bring their unique flare to the parts the play in the show. No two performances are the same and all of the shows are full of energy and personality and individualism.
MCB: SuicideGirls has been a relevant social networking website long before Facebook and Twitter and was launched even before Friendster and Myspace What are some of the contributing factors that have kept SG still so relevant over the past 14 years while others have fallen from internet grace?
MISSY: The people who are members of SuicideGirls.com all find tattooed and pierced girls attractive and are reasonable adults who don’t leave jerky comments. Those two things that people have in common has made it the meeting place for outsider culture on the internet for over 14 years. You know that the people you meet on SuicideGirls.com think outside of the box and seek out the type of beauty that is not found everywhere and they know how to have a decent civil conversation, even on the internet.
Which while a simple criteria, as you know as a user of social networks, is incredibly difficult, wether it is having to endure friends or family on Facebook expounding their conservative political views, or the “want to fuck?” guy who leaves the same lewd comments on any Instagram with more than 100 followers.
We have had hundreds of couples meet on the site and get married, dozens of babies have been born because their parents met on SuicideGirls. Thousands of business connections, bands have formed, and countless friendships and life changing partnerships that have been made over the past 14 years on our site.
MCB: When receiving 30,000 applications a year from individuals looking to become a Suicide Girl, what are the very first things you look for in a applicant? What is the application screening process like for you and the staff and do you ultimately have the final say who becomes a Suicide Girl?
MISSY: We look for confident women who want to contribute their definition of beauty to the discussion. We look for women who have something unique and interesting to share with the world. All of the sets go into member review so the models have to resonate with the community, through their images and words. We have had women who have contributed sets for years before going pink but they became fixtures in the community and learned and listened and utilized the communities feedback and support to became the strong confident models they wanted to be.
MCB: SuicideGirls has undoubtedly made it's mark in pop culture and the evolution of erotica. Who would you say had the most impact in the evolution of erotica in relation to the existence of SuicideGirls? Is there a model, photographer, publisher, or other individual that impacted society and eventually yourself?
MISSY: For me the inspiration for SuicideGirls came from Bunny Yeager’s photos of Betty Page. There was a confident, playfulness that came through in the way that having a beautiful women pose for another woman that was so revolutionary for me. That she was enjoying being in her own body, not for a man or to be sexy but just comfortable and enjoying her confident purest self. That was lacking in early 2000’s when mainstream media held up two boxes to fit into if you wanted to be beautiful. It was a revelation to me to be able to just say “fuck it” I AM beautiful just how I am. I wanted to share the message that the more comfortable you are with your body and your self the happier you would be and the more happy people there are in the world the better things are for everyone :)
MCB: What can we expect from SuicideGirls in the future? Any future releases or endeavors you can discuss?
MISSY: I have LOTS of plans, I feel like the future holds tons of really exciting things for SuicideGirls and I am more inspired by the message and the community than ever. Nothing I can spill yet but soon :)
